Based on my research, there are mainly two types of Chinese journalist-bloggers.One kind of bloggers is trying their best to report the truth through posting blogs.
While being a journalist in
China has never been easy option for those seeking a peaceful life, it has always been a relatively safe profession for journalists who avoid ‘certain grey areas’, it is safer to report in line with government expectation.
It is easier for the Chinese reporters to tell what they really think. News can not be discovered on the newspapers, on the camera. They can post the comment in their blogs. That’s why Rui Chenggang ‘s forbidden city story are highly-clicked in mainland china. Now it has become a new trend for hundreds of thousands of mainland people subscribe these journalists’ blogs which investigate in-depth stories. Internet offers journalists’ space to speak their mind when traditional media has remained under tight control. The journalist-bloggers are impacting Chinese journalism to be more open forward the freedom of speech.
But, some argue that the golden age of political blogging and online expression on tough subjects are coming to an end in today’s
China under the government’s tighter control than before. I agree with it.
For example, here’s a story about a sports journalist who do not support 2008 Olympics. The leading Chinese sports journalist had opened a blog merely to discuss whether or not even to boycott next year’s Olympics. The blog lasted about a week before it was shut down because of the Seventeenth Party Congress. In his original blog now named ‘Opposing the Olympics will not be allowed‘, he posted that police had come looking for him:
[translation] “Six days later, this short-lived blog was then “harmonized”. A few days after that, the authorities showed up wanting to have a chat with me, get an idea about my ideological stance, social connections, who I’ve been in touch with. You could wait your whole life and never see big, tough me as nervous as I was then, but I was resolved: I didn’t feel I’d done anything wrong.
They started off nicely enough, saying my blog had been getting played up by some overseas media, asking if I knew. I said I didn’t know (I really didn’t). They said I’d been distorted and taken advantage of, that I’d become a victim. I said if people take advantage of me, that’s not my doing. They said the Olympics are so blah blah blah good for the people, I said it’s best if everyone maintains their own perspective.
Back in the office, narcissistic little I went straight to Baidu, wanting to see how foreign media had taken advantage of me. I can’t search for foreign-language news, so I just found some Chinese-language reports, and they said it was for real, that my blog had been shut down by authorities because it didn’t support the Beijing Olympics.”
The other Chinese journalists-bloggers who are well-known for posting “sensitive topics” suffer from being deleted or shut down. Li Yong, Daily news, reporter,
Beijing (shut down in protest against ongoing deletions).Chen Min, Southern Weekly, editor,
Guangzhou (ongoing post deletions).Yan Lieshan, Southern Weekly, editor,
Guangzhou (ongoing post deletions).
On the other hand, some other Chinese journalist bloggers create their blogs posting share their feelings and personal experiences with people. For instance, Rose Luqiu, a Phoenix TV journalist creates her personal website. 柴静(Chai Jing), a CCTV journalist, has many fans and supports in mainland China. They enjoy the feeling of being a star report instead of touching those tough topics directly.
November 4th, 2007 — District Council Elections
I have noted that one of the biggest party, Democratic Party, bought airtime of outdoor video wall (LED) in downtown Causeway Bay to appeal to voters in the upcoming election. That is a new development of campaign of local elections which were used to be dull and traditional. May story will be focused on the employment of new media technology, ie, email, sms, outdoor video wall, etc. by political parties in fighting the upcoming poll. I was told my staffs of several political parties that they have learnt tactics of campaign from their study tours to Taiwan elections where campaign tactics were more 3-D and dynamic. For example, Taiwan politicans and parties spent millions of dollar in buying TV commercial airtime and producing their own campaign advertisments. However, Hong Kong is a more conservative cities where political advertisments are still regarded by many politicans and parties as “alnormal”. My story will explore how political parties and politicans struggle against the employment of new media.
The audio is recorded from the DP campain vedio. “Please go to the Victoria Park on October 7 to join hands in support of democracy of HK.” “Support Universal S in 2012 and join the march for democracy.” “Hope to see you ar Victoria Park!”

Before I started my advancer story plan, I went through Mindy McAdams’ Online Journalism website for the best collection of tips. “Start here: How many types or formats do we have? Which one is best for each part of the story you have to tell text, photos, graphics, audio, video, user interaction.” said Maindy.
STORY: Actually, my story is “How the media covers the election”. Maindy said it was important to raise the most eyes-attracted part. I will narrow my topic and focus on how Chan-Ip fight affects coverage. It is true that “story of the story”: 1) Is the spirit of political apathy being perpetuated by
Hong Kong news media in the case of the DC elections? the reasons behind the scene of very little in-depth coverage on the DC elections? 2) Why the local media doesn’t cover district council elections very much? DC election vs. Legco by-election (how Chan-Ip fight affects coverage)? 3) There is a trend that more and more candidates are emphasizing the key role of new media such as outdoor LED/LCD, election website. 4) Online election is or will be acceptable in
Hong Kong?
INTERVIEW: journalists from newspaper like Mingpao and magazine like YAZHOUZHOUKAN Journalists from TV like TVB;Journalists from New media like ONN(Outdoor News Network) Also I will interview foreign journalists and oversea media and candidates.
PHOTOS: Some efforts have been done to increase the publicity of the District Council Elections by the parties, like inviting pop singers Joey Yung and Hins Cheung to attend the opening ceremony. I will capture a chance to take photos on such kind of ceremony. I have already attended press conferences of DAB and Democratic Party and taken some photos, in particular, the Democratic Party held a press conference at the world trade center square in
Causeway
Bay. The background was a big LED. A candidate said they should pay attention to the key role of new media, but they ignored the significance of new media.AUDIO: sound from journalists to explain how they prepare their reports and their comment about how Chan-Ip fight affects DC election coverage; sound from experts to explain why the local media do not want to cover DC election much and is there any room for them to improve and how else can media promote the awareness of DC elections;sound from candidates about their feedback and comments.

Mr. Tse Ka Yin, a photographer of a local news agency. I just took the photo when he was shooting on a DAB press conference.
Mr. Tse Ka Yin explained how he and his colleagues prepare to cover the upcoming District Council Elections. According to some newspapers, most voters changed their focus from universal suffrage to their live standard such as welfare, medical care system and tax etc. But Tse believed that the universal suffrage was still one of the hottest topics. And also he gave me some suggestions how to balance my coverage so my District Council Elections story would not be biased. Mr. Tse found an interesting phenomenon- the press did not pay much attention to the work of the district council, but when it came to this election, the press put quite a lot of resources to cover it. He advised me to find out the reason.

Nominations for the polls open on October 2, 2007 and close on October 15.The local media wake up instead of keeping silence and start talking about the District Council Elections finally.Scmp.com focuses on the DC elections and posted a report on Oct 01, 2007 by an interesting title “Big two ready for head-to-head clashes” to attract readers. “The city’s two big political parties will go head to head in 52 of the 405 constituencies up for grabs in next month’s district council elections, the candidates lineup unveiled Sunday shows.” Some analysts see the Democrats facing a tough battle, despite a landslide victory in the last district council polls in 2003, according to the report.
Mingpao says “A core theme of the Democrats’ platform is universal suffrage by 2012, while the DAB has opted to focus on livelihood issues.” with the detail introduction of the new party members of two political parties.

“Downloading games from the Internet is one of the best things about owning a PSP. Be careful though, you may end up like me and find yourself addicted to PSP gaming, and just like an addict, your life will become consumed by the search for the next hit (game).”said Kaman, my thirteen-year-old niece.
She’s a PSP support. “Learning how to download games, music and movies onto your PSP will open an entire new world of entertainment for you. However, one of the biggest drawbacks to downloading games is the expense. ”
Statistics from local media show that each person in Hong Kong spends hk$129 every week on average. According to media in mainland China, most of the players in China spend an average of two or three hours online and less than one hour of game playing every day, accounting for 63.5% of the total Internet users. I found that PSP/NDS addicts are almost everywhere in the city-bus, metro, ferry and even the elevator.
A report of Computer addict dead at screenFrom local media really shocked me. Oh, my God.
Actually, less than three hours’ game playing is healthy for teenagers, while the two-hour period beyond it is “tiring time” in which the gains of the teenagers will be reduced by half,
and game playing of more than five hours is unhealthy and the gamers will have even fewer abilities to play well.
“This is a measure taken to force teenagers to go offline to have a rest or study.” Said an expert from the Anti-addiction Game system. Fortunately some countries including China open
Game-addiction clinic. They want to prevent people especially teenagers from becoming game junkies.
“How can I stop this internet and video game addiction and start getting my head down, studying more and enjoy life outside my bedroom?” asked Kaman yesterday. I post this story in my blog looking forward to helpful
comments to break her game addiction.

Today we start the class with veteran photographer Siuki Yip, who will discuss what makes a good news photograph. He will take a look at some of the photographs you posted to the NMW Flickr group and pick out a few examples for discussion about what works and what doesn’t work.
We will then go through a quick and dirty Photoshop tutorial to make sure that everybody knows how to crop, adjust, resize, and save their photos for the web.

“Why the local media doesn’t cover DC elections very much?” I believe that media coverage of the elections is in itself an important story. So I keep an eye on the feeds and tags I have subscribed to about DC elections, and continue to add to them as needed. I find out media just focuses on the forthcoming Legco By-election. For example, SCMP reported Anson Chan touches up election platform. Sing Tao Daily described the final fight of Anson Chan.Apple Daily(城中热话Hong Kong Hot Issues ) organized a survey, a standardized questionnaire administered in which respondents were asked about their political views.

All the above three didn’t mention DC elections, besides, Ming Pao updated DC elections news. By contrast, participation in discussion of DC elections is not confined to a minority of
Hong Kong’s population. More and more blogs and forums available have reinforced the role of DC election for the public to participate in political debates. Hong Kong’s Blogazine and Gerek’s Blog talking about DC elections are very interesting, especially Gerek’s Blog indicates DAB’s huge loss in the 2003 DC elections, rebuilding in 2004 and prophetic result in 2007, “the DAB is likely to be the biggest winners. They are fielding 200 candidates and it would not be surprising to see more than half of them get elected this time.”
